- Increasing vulnerability to drought with reduced per capita water storage highlights the need for improved quantification of the likelihood of megadrought (i.e. the risk of a longer and or more perverse drought than previously experienced). Of concern is the fact that we don't have enough data to understand the extent of drought risk in Australia because climate records are too short (at best ~ 120 years or shorter). In this paper we suggest extending the instrumental data using paleoclimate sources (e.g. tree rings) to update drought risk profiles and inform planning frameworks for drought response. Planning frameworks are required that examine the risks and options for mitigating those risks.
